National YaR Convention focuses on Migrant Youth in the unorganised sector in India
By Fr. Shaji Joseph SDB
Guwahati, Mar. 14. The SPCSA YaR Forum organised the National YaR Convention from March 01-04, 2012 at Guwahati. Over 80 salesians and collaborators from the provinces of India participated. The primary focus was ``Migrant children/youth in the unorganized sector in India.`` Constructive collaboration and national networking emerged as the key ways of addressing the problems of migrant children/youth in India.

Raziya Ismael from Delhi and Dr. Khakuti from Guwahati were the main facilitators. The discussions and sharing of lived experiences was an effort to comprehend the causes of migration, take stock of the vulnerable situation of migrant youth, Proposals for meaningful intervention and effective prevention also emerged. The participants expressed the need for a national survey on migration which could become a road map for coordinated intervention.
Given the gravity of the situation of migrant children and youth, the need for constructive collaboration with the Government and consolidated networking with other NGOs, was suggested. The proposal to be more than just subservient implementing agencies, and partner with the government to adopt a right-based approach was mooted.
The convention also desired that the existent centres ought to reach out to the migrants so as to enable confidence in them during their moments of support. Advocacy and formation of migrant youth  units located in YaR centres was the concrete action plan. If implemented, this could be a massive project with YaR centre spread over 70 cities and towns of India.
