Vandalization at Don Bosco Shrine, Hyderabad
By Thathireddy sdb
Hyderabad, Jun. 15. In the early hours of 12th June, 2010 between 2.15 am and 3.00 am, some miscreants vandalized and desecrated the statues of Mary Help of Christians and Don Bosco of the Don Bosco Shrine - Bandlaguda (Hyderabad), the statue of Mother Mary on the south-west wall of BIRDY and the statue of St. Michael of St. Michaels Colony, Bandlaguda. Because of earlier attacks on Christian pastors in the area, the Christian communities around are very concerned and anxious.

On 12th June, 2010, Fr. B. Sudhakar sdb, was travelling back after a two-day training programme for teachers in Guntur. As he reached the Don Bosco Shrine, at 3.00 am, to his shock he noticed the statue of Mary Help of Christians, lying in the middle of the road, and the statue of Child Jesus in her arms, was broken into pieces. He also noticed that the statues of Don Bosco and St. Michael were also desecrated. He reached the provincial house and alerted the confreres, who joined him to reach the spot.  The police were informed and they reached the place within 10 minutes. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, ordered the police to place back the statues and clean the area. They suggested that it would be better that the statues be replaced in their respective places, than on the road, lest this become a cause for communal disharmony. The confreres cooperated in this. The police themselves helped to put back the statues in place. They promised to take immediate action to nab the culprits and the investigation is on.
The Arch-bishop and others were informed of the developments. The Sarpanch and the local MLA turned up and expressed their sympathies. The Arch-bishop suggested that a protest rally be organized. The protest rally was organized on Sunday 13th June, 2010. The Sisters of Charity, the Catholic Samakhya as well as other Catholic Associations responded very spontaneously.
We are making arrangements for reparation for the desecration, restoration of all the damages and re-dedication of the statues at the earliest. We hope to restore the confidence of the people and not allow this event to divide us, rather unite us more in our faith and commitment to Jesus and to Mother Mary.
Both the BIRDY and the Provincial House communities along with the Sisters of Charity, parishners and the staff are actively working together on this issue.
