DBTI-Kolkata Exhibits Trade Skills

Kolkata, Jan. 29. The Staff and Students of Don Bosco Technical Institute Park Circus put up an exhibition to show case their trade skills, 29 January. Spread out in four class rooms, students of Mechanical and Electronics departments had 40 items on display. All items were manufactured or put together at school mostly by the students of Electronics (26 items) and Mechanical (14 items).

``We want our students not only have hands-on-training but also attempt inventing gadgets for gainful daily applications,`` says DBTI Assistant Principal Fr Jijo taking visitors around.
``We plan to hold exhibition as annual feature not only to provide opportunity for talent and creativity demo but also to showcase student caliber to industry captains,`` adds Fr Jijo who hopes such exercise will increase job placement.
An eye-catcher exhibit was the working model of a fully automated railway system which takes care of automatic signaling, track changing, unmanned rail gate closing and opening, and prevention of head-on-collision.
Another electronic invention was a back up system for FM Radio which would continue playing even in power failure, of course without batteries.
A whole lot of inventions using sensors for variety of home applications such as automatic water pump switch off, electronic water level indicator, automatic night lamps, dog/burglar alarms, electronic file tracking system for office were on display.
Besides finished products, Mechanical section exhibits had detailed drawings for every production stage and mechanical part.
``We could put up only 14 items this year,`` adds superintendent of mechanical section Brother Theophilus praising hard work put in by his staff and students.
At every item on display there were batches of students who proudly explained their inventions and its practical applications to fellow students as well as visitors from Don Bosco Liluah and non-formal sections.
Established in 1967, DBTI Kolkata today has 150 studentts in the ITI section and 200 in the non-formal section. Member of DB Tech India, DBTI is also a centre for Modular Employable Skills (MES) since 2008.
Kolkata province has eight Technical schools. They are at Park Circus, Liluah, Mirpara, Krishnagar, Kalimpong, Berhampore, Dumka and Ashalayam.
