It was yet another maiden attempt on the part of DBICA to organize a seminar on ``Children & Television`` in view of the World Television day that was celebrated on the 21st of November.  More than 500 school children from nine city schools participated in this novel seminar, in which the main speakers were students themselves. The seminar was organized at St. Mary`s Auditorium, Parry`s Chennai on the 27th November, from 9.30 a.m to 12.30p.m.

The seminar began with a visual song Glued to the tube which depicted the story of a boy who was addicted to TV and how he comes out of that addiction positively.  The dignitaries at the inaugural session were Rev. Deva Joe, the Rector & Correspondent of St. Mary`s, Rev. Siby, the Principal of St. Mary`s, Ms. Charley Pinfold, the Media personality from U.K and Mr. Anand Krishnamoorthi, the renowned Sound engineer and actor, were duely felicitated after the welcome address by the Director of Don Bosco institute of Communication (DBICA) Fr. Harris Pakkam.

The inaugural message delivered by Rev. Deva Joe set the tone for the whole seminar, clarifying the purpose and role of Television and its impact on school children.  Ms. Charley Pinfold in her message gave a thought provoking message, exhorting everyone to be inspiring and creative in his/her perception.

Mr. Anand Krishnamoorthi, the chief guest and the moderator for the seminar began his interaction and initiated the discussions with pertinent and relevant insights.  The discussion began with a very optimistic note, highlighting the positive aspects of Television in which Jeevitha from St. Aloysius School & Joseph Jose. K. from St. Mary`s affirmed that all propaganda, information, education was possible because of Television and how it was a useful medium which brought about togetherness, understanding and promoted various cultural and art forms.

The second part of the discussion was on Advertisements & its impact on Children, during which Sneha Sethupathy of Sacred Heart`s and K. N. Krishnan of St. Bede`s, highlighted the effects of the Ads and how they mesmerized and misled the young people with false values and desires, but at the same time posed the challenge that we could even draw out the best from a commercial, if it was really useful.

Speaking on the relevance of talk shows, Joseph Raj of our Lady`s School spoke eloquently on its impact and its contribution to students` growth.  The moderator very creatively added, that if talk shows could help the society in moments of crisis and difficulties with interesting discussions it would be very welcoming and useful.

Mohammed Ashan. M. of St. Antony`s, brought in lot of beautiful points on the role of television in the family, and how it has replaced the traditional values and family customs. He emphatically stated that the family time and togetherness is found before and around the TV, and how much of every day time was being consumed before the television. Soundraya & Vignesh, the students from Velammal gave a critical analysis on the television  programmes that students view and how they influenced them both positively and negatively.

The last part of the seminar was dedicated to lots of interesting interactions and discussions among the students, during which the moderator, Mr. Anand Krishnamoorthi constantly affirmed that a responsible, critical and intelligent consumption of television messages would foster a healthy growth. He said we need to make right choices about the way we choose to consume media, and determines its impact.
