RM addresses more than 2000 youth at Dimapur

Dimapur, Nov. 5. The Rector Major, Fr. Pascual Chavez, who is on a three-day visit to Dimapur, the headquarters of the Province of Dimapur, was accorded a public and grand reception at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, on 5 November, by more than two thousand youth from various Don Bosco institutions of the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam.

The fluttering of colourful flags by hundreds of students from Don Bosco School, Dimapur, dressed in traditional attire, scouts and guides, young people from 46 centres of Dimapur Province, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Cooperators, Don Bosco Alumni, teachers, Government officials, friends, well-wishers and invited guests was a scene to behold.

Extending an affectionate welcome Fr. James Poonthuruthil, Salesian Provincial of  Dimapur, gave a brief description of Dimapur Province in his welcome speech. ``Dimapur Province is a mosaic of colourful cultures and traditions hailing from the four states of North East, Nagaland, Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh,`` he said.

Cultural Extravaganza depicting the life and culture of people brought in Meitei Dance from Manipur, Angami Folk Dance from Kohima, Nagaland, Harvest dance from Tirap, Arunachal Pradesh, Jhumur Adivasi Dance from Tinsukia, Assam, Samgo Lembo Apatani Dance from Arunachal Pradesh, Rongali Bihu Dance from Jorhat, Assam and Vande Matram from Don Bosco Maram Manipur.

Archbishop Dominic Lumon of Imphal, while extending his warm welcome to Fr. Chavez, in the name of the priests, religious and the faithful of the region, noted that the history of the Church in Manipur and Nagaland owes its beginning to the hard work of the Don Bosco Fathers. He wished that this visit would enthuse the members of the society to continue to work in committed manner.

``You are not only the future of the society but the present of the society. You are the main resource of India. You are the main resource of North East India,`` said Fr. Pascual in his address to more than two thousand youth gathered for the occasion. He expressed his happiness in being able to see Dimapur and witness the rich cultural heritage of the land as well as the work being done by the Salesians in different parts of the region. He reminded them that there are millions of youth in North East who are so exposed to dangers of various types yet so rich in promise, so intelligent and so capable. He invited them to not only take the stage to perform dances, but to take over the stages of history, by developing their inner potentialities to build up the region. He called upon everyone present, to unite and rise above the differences of colours, tribes, languages, and social status to work together for the common good of the region.

Fr. Pascual Chavez, was flanked by Rt. Rev. Dominic Lumon, Archbishop of Imphal, and Apostolic administrator of Kohima diocese, Rt. Rev. Joseph Aind, Bishop of Dibrugarh, Rt. Rev. P.K George, Bishop of Miao, Rt. Rev. John Thomas, Bishop of Itanagar, Fr. Maria Arokiam, Regional Councilor for South Asia, Rev. Fr. Juan Jose Bartholome, Secretary to the Rector Major, Fr. Michael Peediyil Salesian Provincial New Delhi, Fr. James Poonthuruthil Salesian Provincial, Fr. Nestor Guria Vice-Provincial, Fr. Jose Palely Economer and other invited guests.
