Catholic Church, Tongna, turns Silver
By Fr. Tarcisius Toppo
Dimapur, Oct. 19. The well packed playground was an encouraging sight in spite of the inclement weather. The 4000 and more faithful who participated in the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Catholic Church Tongna, Upper Assam, on 18 October, indeed demonstrated their faith and unity, braving the showers, before, during and after the Eucharistic celebration. A surprise as well as an encouragement for everyone present. Inconveniences did not in any way bring down the spirit of the occasion and celebration.

The solemn Eucharist was presided over by Rt. Rev. Joseph Aind, Bishop of Dibrugarh, with 23 priests concelebrating and an equal number of Sisters present for the celebration.
``Jubilee is an occasion to thank, praise God for the wonders He has worked in the lives of the faithful of the parish`` said the Bishop Joseph Aind, in his homily. Commenting on the Mission Sunday that coincided with the celebration, he reminded the faithful of their responsibility of being missionaries through their good and exemplary lives.
Others dignitaries present for the occasion were, Fr. Nestor Guria, Vice Provincial, Fr. Jose Palely, Provincial Economer, Sister Provincial of Sisters of Mary Immaculate, all the Past Pastors of the Parish.
The occasion was also made memorable with 150 receiving for the first time the Eucharistic Lord, and 300 others being confirmed in the faith, to bear witness to Christ.
After the Eucharistic celebration the guests were felicitated with songs and dances and during the programme those who worked in the parish in the capacity of Parish priests or Assistant Priests were specially honoured.
The St. Dominic Savio Church, Tongna, is situated at an equidistance of twenty-three km from the Doom Dooma and Philobari parishes in Assam. It is also a gateway to the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. The parish was officially opened on 3 July in 1983, carved out of Doom Dooma parish. The first parish priest was late Fr. Philip Kokappallil. The Sisters of Mary Immaculate who help in the parish came in 1987. So far as many as 16 priests have worked as Pastors or Assistant Pastors. The parish has around twenty two Christian communities. The number of Catholics is around 6400.
