YOUTH MEET ON RESPONSIBLE USE OF MEDIA

Dimapur, Sep. 27. On Sunday 27 September 2009 Salesian College, Dimapur, Nagaland, held its annual Youth Meet at Salesian College premises from 9.00 a.m to 4.30 p.m. The Theme of the Youth Meet was ``Responsible Use of Media``. Nearly a thousand young people from the various Sunday oratories of Salesian College took part in the event. They came from the various villages and hostels in and around Dimapur town belonging to the six parishes of the two dioceses of Kohima (Nagaland) and Diphu (Assam)

Mr.Neiba Ndang, the Former Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Former Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Secretary General of North East Nationalist Congress Co-ordinating Committee was the chief guest for the occasion. The Guests of honour were, Rt.Rev. Jose Mukala, Bishop of Kohima, Mrs. Asono Ndang, OSD, Education Department, Kohima, and Rev.Fr. Nestor Guria SDB, Vice-Provincial, Salesian province of Dimapur.

The Youth Meet is one of the major events which Salesian College organizes each year as part of its youth pastoral ministry. It is an event much looked forward to by the youth. Each year, on an average some 1000 youths take part in the programme. The Youth Meet of 27 September 2009 consisted of a solemn Youth Mass for the Catholics youth presided over by Rt Rev.Jose Mukala, bishop Kohima, a specially prepared prayer service for non-Catholics, a common meal and an hour of animation programme in small groups on the theme of the Youth Meet. The grand finale of the event was a colourful cultural programme by the youth which consisted of songs, traditional dances, choreography and skits on the theme of the Youth Meet, namely ``Responsible Use of Media``.

Salesian College, Dimapur, is a post-novitiate house of formation for the provinces of Dimapur, Guwahati and New Delhi. Regular Sunday oratory activities is part of the formation programme of the institution. Through them the young Salesians are given practical experience in youth pastoral ministry. The activities they carry out in the Sunday oratories include: basic literacy classes for non-starters, promotion of literacy among women and girl children, spoken English classes, special classes for school-dropouts, tuition for weak school going children, building small village schools, seminars and awareness programmes on literacy, education and use of media, Sunday catechism for Catholics and moral science for non-Catholics, ``newspaper apostolate``, non-formal vocational training for school drop-outs from villages, financial assistance for poor students, publication of a monthly leaflet called Literacy Link, mobile library, promotion of reading rooms in villages, occasional medical camps, village Masses, preparing children/adults for baptism, first Holy Communion and confirmation, annual Youth Meet, inter-oratory Bible Skit and Bosco Sing-out competitions, promotion of voluntarism among youth, etc.
